If you’ve been dreaming of a wedding that feels like a real getaway, one where guests travel in, settle into a beautiful property, and actually linger, the Hudson Valley was made for you. Destination weddings in Hudson Valley give couples something a traditional ballroom just can’t: a sense of place. Rolling hills, orchard views, historic barns, mountain backdrops, and river light. It all adds up to a wedding that feels like an experience, not just an event.

We’re KR Occasions, a full-service wedding planning and design company based in the Hudson Valley and Catskills. For over a decade, we’ve helped couples plan weddings across this region that feel effortless, personal, and completely their own. If you’re starting to think about your own Hudson Valley wedding, we’d love to connect. Take a look at our planning packages and let’s start talking.

Why the Hudson Valley Is Perfect for a Destination Wedding

The Hudson Valley sits about 90 minutes north of New York City, which makes it genuinely easy to get to. But it feels worlds away once you’re there. That’s a rare combination for destination weddings in Hudson Valley: close enough that most NYC guests don’t need to fly, far enough that everyone feels like they’ve gone somewhere.

The region spans roughly from Westchester County up through the Catskills and into the foothills of the Adirondacks. Within that stretch, you’ll find:

  • Working farms, orchards, and cideries with indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces
  • Historic inns and boutique hotels where guests can stay on-site
  • Renovated barns with mountain views and outdoor cocktail spaces
  • Resort-style properties with full weekends of activities built in

That variety is a big reason destination weddings in Hudson Valley have grown so much. There’s a venue for almost every aesthetic: industrial-chic, rustic-refined, garden-romantic, or laid-back and woodsy.

What Makes a Hudson Valley Destination Wedding Unique

The Hudson Valley isn’t just a backdrop. It’s an ingredient. The food here is farm-to-table in the most literal sense. Many venues source their menus directly from their own land or neighboring farms. The cider, wine, and spirits are regional. The florals are often sourced from local growers.

Destination weddings in Hudson Valley also tend to stretch across a full weekend rather than just a single evening. Guests arrive Friday, explore the area, gather for a rehearsal dinner, celebrate Saturday, and ease into Sunday brunch before heading home. That slower pace changes the whole energy of the celebration. People connect more and the couple actually relaxes.

A few things that set Hudson Valley weddings apart:

  • Many venues offer on-site accommodations, so guests don’t need to find separate lodging.
  • The landscapes change dramatically by season. Fall foliage, winter snow, spring blossoms, and summer greenery all offer completely different looks.
  • The region has a rich arts and food culture, which means rehearsal dinners, welcome activities, and farewell brunches have a lot to work with.
  • Vendors in this area are deeply experienced with the region’s specific venues and conditions.

Pros & Cons of a Destination Wedding in the Hudson Valley

Like any destination, there are real tradeoffs worth thinking through before you commit.

The Pros:

  • Guests who travel in are invested. They show up ready to celebrate and stay present all weekend.
  • Built-in accommodation options at or near the venue make logistics easier for everyone.
  • The scenery does a lot of the design work for you.
  • Weekend-length celebrations give you more time with the people you love most.
  • Hudson Valley wedding venues tend to offer flexible, customizable spaces.

The Cons:

  • Guest count often drops for destination weddings. Not everyone can take a full weekend away.
  • Travel and lodging adds cost for guests, which is worth acknowledging in your planning.
  • Weather in the Hudson Valley is real and variable. A backup plan for outdoor ceremonies isn’t optional.
  • Logistics across multiple days (welcome bags, shuttles, activity coordination) require more planning than a single-day event.

Working with a local Hudson Valley wedding planner matters here, and we’ll get into that more at the end of this guide.

Best Hudson Valley Wedding Venues

These are six of our favorite wedding venues in the region. Places we’ve worked at, know well, and can speak to honestly.

1. City Winery Hudson Valley, Newburgh, NY

City Winery Hudson Valley sits right on the Hudson River in Newburgh, with exposed brick walls, wine barrels, wood beams, and glowing string lights that make the space feel warm and industrial at the same time. It’s one of those Hudson Valley wedding venues that photographs beautifully no matter what you do with it, but it also comes alive with the right details.

2. The Arnold House, Livingston Manor, NY

The Arnold House is a historic 1900 farmhouse hotel and tavern in Livingston Manor, deep in Sullivan County. The greenhouse ceremony space, wood-fired dining, and cozy interiors make it one of the most intimate wedding venues in Hudson Valley, especially for winter weddings.

3. The Barn on Hubbard, Catskills, NY

The Barn on Hubbard is a restored 19th-century barn in the Catskills with 4,000 square feet of event space, European-style gardens, a gravel courtyard with fire pits, and mountain views. It’s built for intimate to mid-sized weddings that want a rustic foundation with room to layer in their own aesthetic.

The venue’s customizable spaces mean it works across a range of styles. We’ve seen it go from wildflower-casual to fully refined depending on the couple. For destination weddings in Hudson Valley, the on-site character of the property gives guests a setting that actually feels worth traveling to.

4. Seminary Hill Orchard & Cidery, Callicoon, NY

Seminary Hill is unlike anywhere else in the Hudson Valley. It’s a working cidery, a farm-to-table restaurant, and a boutique hotel, and it sits on a hillside in Western Sullivan County with views that stretch for miles. Weddings here happen under a sailcloth tent with the orchard and hills as the backdrop.

We planned Francesca and Ryan’s tented wedding here, and it’s one of our favorites. The combination of Seminary Hill’s natural setting and their personal details made the whole day feel alive. Read every detail here.

5. Buttermilk Falls Inn, Milton, NY

Buttermilk Falls Inn is a Hudson Valley resort and spa in Milton, NY with a working farm, willow trees, a stone bridge, resident alpacas, and a red barn. It’s one of the most visually layered of the wedding venues in Hudson Valley NY, with a dozen different backdrops on a single property.

6. Wylder at Windham, Windham, NY

Wylder at Windham is a full resort property in the Northern Catskills, with historic lodges, mountain views, and the Batavia Kill running through the grounds. It’s built for full wedding weekends. Guests stay on-site, explore the Catskills, and gather for multiple events across the weekend. It’s one of the best options for destination weddings in Hudson Valley if a multi-day experience is what you’re after.

We planned Sabrina and Jesse’s fall wedding weekend here. Their outdoor ceremony under a chuppah, with the mountains behind them was one of the most beautiful ceremonies we’ve been part of. You can read their full story here.

Best Time of Year for a Hudson Valley Destination Wedding

Fall (September–November):  is the most popular season for destination weddings in Hudson Valley, and for good reason. The foliage is extraordinary, the temperatures are comfortable for outdoor ceremonies, and the harvest season means incredible food and cider.

Spring (late April–June): is the second most popular window. The landscape is blooming, the light is soft, and the weather is mild. May can bring rain, so a tent or indoor backup is worth having.

Summer (July–August): offers long days and warm evenings, but Hudson Valley humidity is real. Ceremonies earlier in the day or venues with good shade and airflow make a big difference.

Winter (December–March): is the most intimate season. Fewer guests tend to travel, but the ones who do are fully committed to celebrating.

Dates to Avoid

A few dates and windows worth knowing before you lock in your venue:

  • Fall foliage peak weekends (typically mid-October) book out 1–2 years in advance at top venues. Plan early if this is your target.
  • Holiday weekends (Labor Day, Columbus Day, Memorial Day) can drive up vendor rates and make travel more complicated for guests.
  • Early April can be unpredictable weather-wise. Late snow and rain are both real possibilities.
  • Local festivals and events in smaller towns like Woodstock, Narrowsburg, or Callicoon can affect lodging availability for guests. Check the local event calendar for your date.

Key Planning Tips for a Smooth Destination Wedding

Destination weddings in Hudson Valley have more moving parts than a single-venue, single-day event. Here’s what we tell every couple we work with:

  • Book accommodations early. The Hudson Valley is a popular weekend destination year-round. Boutique hotels and inns near popular venues fill up fast, especially in fall. Send guests a room block or accommodation list as soon as you set your date.
  • Plan transportation. Many venues are in areas without rideshare service. Shuttle coordination between lodging and the venue isn’t optional. It’s logistics that saves a lot of stress on the day.
  • Build in a welcome event. A casual Friday welcome dinner or drinks gathering sets the tone and gives guests who traveled in a way to connect before the wedding day.
  • Communicate with out-of-towners. A wedding website with clear directions, lodging options, and a weekend schedule goes a long way.
  • Have a weather plan. Outdoor ceremonies in the Hudson Valley need a backup. Every season has its variables, and a tent, indoor space, or clearly communicated rain plan keeps the day on track no matter what happens.

These are things we take off your plate entirely. If you want a destination wedding weekend that runs smoothly from Friday arrival to Sunday goodbye, let’s talk.
